So, I started this blog months and months ago to give me motivation to do this marathon. I knew if I said 'I'll do it', I probably wouldn't. Hence the reason for doing it for charity, updating blog etc. I said I wanted to reach a target weight and a target waist size. I haven't reached them yet BUT I am fitter and stronger than I was when I started the blog. So, although I haven't achieved THESE goals, I HAVE achieved the main one.
Can I complete a marathon with 30 weeks training? Yes I can and I did.
Now the important thing here is for me to say it wasn't easy, there were times in my training and on the day (at the start line), that I didn't think it was possible. It would have been a ridiculous task had it not been for the support I've had from my friends, family, workmates and random people in the street. My motivation was Garry and Lee - http://www.breakingstrain.co.uk/ but that changed seeing Big Pete and Stevie S putting in the training (and Jeff), I also saw guys I'd known for years, who I had never trained with, volunteering to train with me and new friends I met through boxing, work etc putting in time to help me train. The net result is that everyone got more motivated.
The guys I was doing the marathon with, along with me, have a background in physical activity/competition to a high level but we had let ourselves get fat, tired and boring (me, Stevie S and Pete that is). Apologies guys but its true. Life, love and family gets in the way and in all honesty, I have never seen these guys happier. I know it was hard for them to find the time to train. Jamie pitched in late to say he was doing it too. Now, what I had was 5 people I admire the most committed to the cause.
To be honest, I cant remember my 5 hrs 49 mins out there. I can't remember the pain. I can't remember the dehydration, the scenery, the banter, the weather, the ambulances or anything. It's like a vague dream. I feel it happened but thats it. I do remember Garry and Lee running the last 200m with me with big cheesy grins and seeing Pete, Stevie, Jamie and L at the end and then Vick, Mia, Laura, and Cat but thats it.
What I'm trying to say is that this was an achievement for me but I used everyone and everything I could for motivation but the bottom line is - IF I CAN DO IT, ANYONE CAN. I don't just mean completing a marathon, I mean ANYTHING. Set your own goals. I'm still overweight and not nearly as fit as I could be, but I'm a helluva lot better off now than I was 30 weeks ago. I'm happier, healthier and have a new found respect for myself and the people around me.
Thank you everyone.

The purpose of this blog is to help me get fit, lose weight and complete a marathon with 30 weeks training. I want to get down to a 32" waist and 12 st in weight. I am currently 38" waist and 14st. I feel that public ridicule and scrutiny from my friends and people who know me, will be the best motivation possible for me as I'm super competitive and do not like 'losing face'!

Peroni
Another long, boring run yesterday. This is getting tiresome now. 6 weeks to go and I'm torn between wanting it to go quickly to get it over with and wishing I had loads more weeks to prepare.
Met Jeff Jefferson at the far end of esplanade in the Ferry. Basically we followed the Tay to the airport and back. Even though the scenery is nice, it was pretty demoralising. I'm sure it was that I hadn't prepared properly that made it so difficult:
- I wasn't hydrated enough before the start
- I had left my hydration backpack in Big Chris' car, so had to run carrying 2 bottles of water
- I didn't get up early enough to prepare a proper breakfast
- I didn't put enough chafe-ease on sensitive areas
These facts contributed to the run being very long, very slow and VERY painful - a bit like my chat sometimes.
I did the run 15 mins quicker than my last 15 miler, so that was a positive and my foot held up well. Jefferson knocked an unbelievable 1 hour off his time though and finished in 3hrs! Amazing.
Managed to crawl up the stairs to my flat and took about 20mins to get me gear off as every muscle and joint in my body was stiff/ painful/ throbbing. Unfortunately, when stepping into my bath, I struggled to get my foot over and my toe crashed off the side of the bath and started off a chain of events that led to me getting cramp in the whole of my other leg and me taking a header off the wall and falling into the bath.
After a quick lie down, headed out for a couple of pints with Boab The Hat and Don Keirleone. 9 pints of Peroni and 3 rum and gingerbeers later (and no food), finally made it home. Pretty impressive off of 20 quid! Alcohol seemed to take the edge off the pain but really struggled to walk/ drive/ sit/ speak today. My eyeballs were even sore. Had to take a half day off at work. Feel ok now after a pizza, bottle of coke, nap and some cookies. Back on the healthy eating from tomorrow.
Sponsorship still coming in, so thanks to everyone who has sponsored me so far too.

Ups and Downs
Tuesday night after work........me Dovile and Chris from work head up to mine to start a hill session. Finally got my running trainers back from GMac's so was looking forward to a hard workout with 'old faithful' trainees.
After Sunday 15 miler and a workout with Craig on Monday, I was feeling confidant and strong. After 10 mins out though, I realised that my legs were probably needing a rest after a hard 4 days of training. Headed down to Magdalene Green then back up onto Perth Rd. Chris and Dovile were building up a lead on the flat but I was catching them on the hills. Did 4 STEEP, HARD hills and we reckon that each had more than a 35 degree incline and West Park Rd nearer 45 at the top. Actually did ok on the hills and was loving the challenge. Turning into a bit of a masochist now whilst training.
Felt my left foot at the bridge get sore about half way through. It felt like I had tied my laces too tightly. Finished the run and foot got worse. Checked on line and it looks like my trainers have had their day and are not giving my feet the support they need. They'll have to be put down. Also, my feet have got used to my other trainers.
Pain got worse Wednesday and by Thursday morning the pain and swelling was so bad, I thought I may have broken something. I went to the docs (resisted A&E after my last visit when the Doc there gave me a bollocking for 'wasting his time with The Gout') and she said I have' inflamed tendons and strained ligaments'. At least nothing broken. Diagnosis - 2 weeks rest. I'll give it 'till Monday and see how it feels. Also need to get new proper running trainees.
Pain still pretty bad but I'll rest up and I'm sure I'll be fine and although, it'll be cutting it fine, I'll be ready for the marathon.
Sponsorship coming in thick and fast too, so thanks to everyone who has donated.

Pain
So, I took my car to a night out on Friday. Fair enough, I left about half 8 but this was momentous. Now I know that might not seem that strange but I think I have done that about 3 times in my life. The reason for the abstance was that I've been getting a bit freaked out that the marathon is only 8 weeks away. This coupled with the sponsorship money starting to come in (thank you to everyone who has donated), gave me - The Fear. I knew I was attempting my first really long run on the Sunday and I knew that I would miss my Saturday session with my trainer Craig and I wouldn't be ready for the Sunday run if I went and had a few beers Friday.
Got up half 7 Sunday morning, breakfasted, then headed through to deepest, darkest Fife - Oakley. The journey took about an hour and 20 and I again had to stop 3 times to answer the call of nature. I have struggled with hydration in the past but I feel I'm getting to grips now but having the bladder the size of a pea, means I pee all the time! Technically this shows that I'm hydrated well but when I do the marathon, I don't want to be stopping every few miles. Not sure of the answer.
Met Big Pete, quick banter with gorgeous baby Mia then we took the best dog ever - Nala out with us on our run. We decided on a 15 mile flat route on a cycle path to Alloa and back. I felt pretty confidant at the start and up to about mile 8, I was thinking things were going well. 8 to 11 was a hard, HARD slog though. Actually, apologies to Pete for my shite banter, or lack of, in those 3 miles. I was nearly down and out and would have definitely have stopped if I'd been on my own. Kept hydrating and taking some energy gels but from mile 11 the soles of my feet started to throb. Definitely, my off road trainers were having an adverse effect. 11 to 12 was horrendous. All my toes, ball of my feet, soles and heels were screaming at me every time I took a step (with my short legs, I take A LOT of steps too). Got to mile 13 (my furthest distance EVER) and we walked for half a mile. Pete gave me some Ibuprofen and paracetamol and by 13.5 miles, my feet were ok. We jogged the last mile and a half and did it - completed 15 miles!!!!!!
It did take us ages though (I think Pete's wife Vicky was genuinely worried) but the most important thing was - we did it! AND came home injury free. After a shower and food, I felt quite proud, surprisingly. Proud of both of us. Still a long, long way to go but I feel a bit more confidant than I did last week and The Fear is subsiding.
All the highs, lows, pain, boredom, joy and doubts you get on a long run are all gone after its done and dusted and in the bag. Celebrated back home with a couple of vodkas and (diet) 7up. Legs fine, back fine, feet a bit delicate but all in all, holding up well.
17 miles this Sunday though.......................

Diggin' deep
Friday 5.00pm, long, hot week at work finishes. Thank God. ANOTHER stunning, hot day in Dundee, bbq to look forward to over the weekend. Really want to enjoy the bbq and have a few beers, so arranged a run for Friday after work AND Saturday morning. In my mind, if I put in loads of effort, I can relax and have a mini blow out after. It will also tie-in nicely with my rest day.
Met Big Chris and Brother B at mine and headed down to Magdalene Green, up onto Perth Rd and went up and down a few roads between Blackness Rd and Perth Rd. For the people that don't know Dundee, these are very steep, 250-400 metre climbs. Did a few of them then tackled a long, steadily increasesing climb for about a mile, then up Balgay Hill. Got to a full hour mark of not stopping, then had to walk to top of the hill. Chuffed to bits. I would never have been able to do all these hills even a few weeks ago. My personal trainer (Craig Guest - book him, he's excellent) definitely helping my fitness, even after only 4 (admittedly) killer sessions. I found myself digging deep and pushing through. Definitely his words 'just keep moving' ringing in my ears, spurred me on.
Did an hour and 20 and it was HARD. Especially in the heat and when cars full of girls are laughing, shouting and pointing at you but all in all probably my best run yet.
Please feel free to sponsor me on the link below. Anything donated will be very much appreciated.

10 weeks today
Been tickling the training lately due to back problems, nights out etc but these are all just excuses. The same as not losing weight and blaming it on beer and curries, it's ME who's drinking the beer and eating the crap, so enough excuses Steve, get your finger out!!!!
Panicked a bit this last week when I realised the marathon is not far away at all. Looked into getting a personal trainer to help out and ended up going with a local guy Craig Guest. Had my first two sessions with him this week and we established that:
Panicked a bit this last week when I realised the marathon is not far away at all. Looked into getting a personal trainer to help out and ended up going with a local guy Craig Guest. Had my first two sessions with him this week and we established that:
- I've put on more weight (up to bang on 15stone)
- I have 'short hamstrings' or in real terms - I am ridiculously UNflexible. Which in turn is not helping my bad back.
- I did a fitness test and actually did ok, so core fitness not too bad.
- Found I DO still have the ability to push myself so hard that I throw up (last time I did that was Brechin pre-season 92/93).
Craig made me up a diet plan and that couple with my sessions with him three times a week and runs, should do the trick for the weight loss.
So, did my first run for a while today. Met Kev and Jeff for a 10 miler at 10am. Started off Monifieth, headed along esplanade into Broughty Ferry. Got up half 7 and had some scrambled egg on toast and LOADS of fluids. This in turn meant that I was desperate for a pee by the start. I stopped after a couple of mins, to duck behind a tree and when I finished Kev and Jeff were pretty far ahead. I couldn't catch them up, so ended up doing the whole run on my own. Usually, I hate that but today it was fine. Had my new Camelbak and some energy gels and a hat, so I was properly hydrated and felt ok all the way through although it was a ridiculous 24 Degrees!
Finished 10 miles in 1hr 53m. Still very slow but 7 minutes quicker than the last time, so pretty chuffed. Well, I was chuffed until I noticed that Jeff had finished, nipped home and showered and changed and came back to see me at the end!
Anyway, half 6 now and normally I would be lying in the foetal position and crawling about the floor, all stiff but not today, feel fine.
New diet starts tomorrow. Maybe have time to sneak in a couple of beers and one last pizza before then.............

Blast from the past
Met Brother B after work. Trying a new approach - my running partner picks the route and distance and I find out when we meet what we're doing. First time trying it tonight. Slightly cheating, as I know BB likes to get home sharpish on a Friday for a beer or two with the mrs, so I figured an hour max.
Beautiful, warm and sunny evening for a run. Ran right along the banks of the Tay, past the airport in no time. Definitely blethering takes the mind off the pain. Had a wee 2 minute walk to the hill then ran up the hill past Botanic Gardens and back onto Perth Road. Heading down past the Harris. Had to have another wee walk. Legs and lungs felt ok and I hate to say it but it was definitely my head that let me down. Not sure whats going on. Anyway BB reckoned if we headed right down Perth Rd into town, there will be loads of people about so I wouldn't stop. Had to agree.
Got down as far as Agacan and saw I guy I used to play football with and was a year above me at school. Now, I would normally have given him a shout and wave and ran on but I hadn't seen him since I was 18 (19 years ago!!!!) and he lives in the States. Stopped and had a good banter with him for a bit until I got the feeling BB was getting jumpy for his beer. Took off down into town, then finished back at work. 5.5-6 miles ish.
Going to try a long run tomorrow. Depending on this run, I'll decide if I'll do the Dundee half marathon next Sunday.
I'll let you know what happens.

Still here!
I'm back.
Had a good few weeks off the blog due to boredom, manfluenza, laziness and general procrastination. Had a few runs in the meantime but nothing major and not any great distance. I had a 8 miler 3 weeks ago and it was a disaster. Had to keep stopping and walking. Felt empty and lacking energy.
Went out for a short 3.5 miler tonight and am now seriously worried. Meant to have the Dundee half marathon a week on Sunday and it looks like that is a complete no go at the moment. Totally lost all co-ordination, stamina and my strongest feature - mental strength. Overall feeling was 'can't be arsed'.
Also, I'm a pretty competitive guy (understatement) and everyone who I had encouraged to start training is now LOADS fitter than me. Annoying. Quite, mild-mannered and all round nice guy Brother Bartholomew's 'mate, your in a worse state than when you started' comment last night at the boxing should have been my first hint that all was not good but this 'run' tonight confirmed it.
So, long and short of it - I need to get my finger out my arse - PRONTO.
Any ideas, hints, abuse and suggestions appreciated.

Stiff
Last Wednesday (18th May), Cheryl, Chris and me tried to vary our Wed Work Running Club route, so decided to run to the bridge, over it and back - 4 miles. It was really REALLY windy but normally its a cross-wind on the bridge, so I thought it would be ok. Wrong. Basically the wind blew us over the bridge and we were running straight into gale force winds on the way back. I actually felt really strong on the way back and even though the bridge run is boring and harsh (even on a nice day) and it was not enjoyable, I felt strong enough to put in a sprint for the last 50 metres. Pop - my calf went again. It actually did feel like a 'pop'. Totally furious with myself. Should have just finished the run without messing about.
I was down in the dumps Wed, Thur and had to miss the Fri run as calf still sore. This led to me drowning my sorrows in some glasses of wine (lower calories than beer) and strangley getting more motivated the more tipsy I got watching the ridiculously fit cyclists on the Tour of Calafornia.
I am getting seriously worried this recurring injury will seriously dent my training plans. It seems to be: run, 4 days to get better, then run again.
Anyway, calf felt ok Sat morning, so planned to do the Dundee Half Marathon route with Jeff. Basically its a cycle route that goes all the way around Dundee. We were doing the Camperdown to Broughty Castle 13.2 mile route. Not to bore you with the details but the route is fairly easy after the first mile and a half which is pretty steep. I honestly never knew this route existed and I would say I hadn't been to 90% of the places on the route.
I managed to reach 12 miles, just reached the esplanade from the Monifieth end and my body seemed to seize up all over. My neck, shoulders, hips, thighs, knees, calves, ankles and especially the soles of my feet were either burning, throbbing or stiff as a board. I stopped and lied down at the side of the road and waited for Jeff to finish the route and pick up the car and come and get me.
I had actually felt pretty good up until about 10 and a half miles and this was the longest run I had done at 2hr 30mins, so all in all, not too bad. I ran out of fluids at 10 miles, so I'm sure there is a link there.
Slept most of the afternoon and woke up in so much pain and soooooo stiff (I mean my legs, back and shoulders/neck area btw) it wouldn't be an exaggaration to say it took me just over 5 minutes to get up and get to my bathroom.
Fluids. Definitely fluids.

Woke up pretty early feeling bright and breezy, so thought I'd do a short run. Had a bit of a rest week this week with only a short run on Wednesday. My calf felt totally fine so decided to do the hill run that I have found horrendous since starting this blog.
Usual route - down from Blackness Ave to Magdelan Green, up first hill, Windsor St.......steady pace, really concntrated on my breathing and got to the top no problem - result.
Along Perth Rd to the dreaded WEST PARK ROAD. Furthest I have made it up here before was just past half way, so was aiming for that today. Shortened my steps (yes, I can take even shorter steps when needed), tried to breathe normally and got to half way feeling surprisingly comfortable. The last third of that road gets even steeper but I dug in, pumped my arms, focused on breathing and MADE IT TO THE TOP!!!!! Took a few minutes walk then slow jog recovery after the top but I was delighted.
Back along Perth Rd, up Glamis, into cementry then up Balgay Hill. Again, I never made it further up more than half way without stopping but again I just seemed to be able to keep going. Inexplicably, I stopped and walked the last 20 metres to the top but still furthest up yet!
Stepped on the pace on way down and put in a good 3 quarter run back to the start - 45 mins.
Came home upbeat, happy, fresh and I think a tiny bit lighter than the week before. Think my good few days rest and change in diet really helped. Also, it was first run out on my own. Food for thought.
Diet been boring but I stuck to it this week, so treated myself to a peh (and sausage roll) and beans for lunch............. oh and a carrot cake.

Loss of Mojo
21 weeks to go...............time to step things up and really comcentrate and focus.Time to analyse my diet and training methods and start pushing myself more and more.
Except...............
I lost my Mojo somewhere around 10pm on Sunday night.
Did a particulary hard, quite a hilly 6.5 run with Big Chris on Friday after work. Struggled but felt good at the end. Got up early Saturday morning for a weights session with Big Ronnie but was feeling really tired, so did only 20 minutes. Continued to feel tired rest of Sat but got up early Sunday to meet Cobby and Jeff Jefferson for a scheduled 11 miler.
I made a horrendous boob on the route planning, which ultimately, led to me and Cobby running through ankle deep grass at the edge of a dual carriageway for about a mile near the start of the run PLUS I was trying out my new hydration backpack, which full weighed 1.8kg. I blame these facts on my left shin muscle starting to ache. Had to stop and then walk for another mile or so. Jeff and Cobb had waited and we had a few minutes discussion to whether we should: a) do the full 11 miles b) cut the route in half and pick up Cobbs car that was parked in the Ferry from night before or c) nip across the road for a McDonalds breakfast. I should say both Cobb and Jeff were out on the lash the night before, so fair do's to them getting up early on a rainy Sunday morning. We ended up running at quite a fast speed down into the Ferry and for about the last mile and a half, I'm sure that was the fastest I've run. All in all about 6 miles up and down, fast pace then walk. Strange run actually.
Had a couple pints watching the Man u v Chelsea match, then went home and had (quite) a bit more alcohol. Shattered.
Knackered, hungry and grumpy on Monday. Had to go to McD's for lunch and ask to get away from work early! Was home in bed for 3.40pm. Woke up half 7 and had a fish supper. tuesday followed pretty much the same pattern. No motivation, no energy and no Mojo.
I think, THINK I was just really fatigued. I had done a lot more miles and general training in the previous 3 weeks and think I just needed a rest.
Did a short 3.25 mile run with the works running/walking club tonight (up to 7 people now) in 36 mins. Hurt my calf (first injury) but actually felt good. Good to see Fiona 'Fi Fi' Denyer and 'Auntie' Audrey Hepburn out with us tonight - well done.
Dare I say it?............................. THE MOJO IS BACK!
Except...............
I lost my Mojo somewhere around 10pm on Sunday night.

President of the World
Finally feeling nearly back to normal after an all day drinking session on Friday AND Saturday. Need to give a mention to the famous Dundee FC. A ridiculous 25 point deduction, transfer embargo and another shyster owner didn't stop a glorius run and looks like a 4th or 5th finishing position in the league. Nearly 8 000 at Dens yesterday to pay tribute to a fantastic team effort. Manager Barry Smith is a true legend, not even a mention for Manager of the Year tonight, that went to the manager of the team that came SECOND. Strange. The reason I'm mentioning this is it brought home to me how much effort that everyone behind the scenes put in this season as well. All the volunteers, helpers and fans who dug deep to keep the club afloat. I saw volunteers and a steward or two crying out of sheer happyness. Quiet humbling. I should have gone to more games this season and in a strange way it boosted my motivation again. I suppose it's a cliche but you need to put in the hard work to get the rewards and Dundee did that this season, proud of them.
Did a 10 mile run with Big Chris on Friday morning. Farthest yet. Not much to say about the run really. I think I'm starting to realise that apart from nearly getting mowed down by the odd speeding car when either I'm not paying attention or the driver's dreaming and getting abuse/encouragement/laughed at by punters, there really isn't much to say and to be honest, it can be quite boring.
I bought a 'hydration belt'. Basically a bum bag that holds a water bottle at the side and a zip pocket for gels, sweets etc. Fully loaded, I felt like I had on Batman's belt. It really helped though. Even though it was a warm sunny day and I had to share all my stuff with BC, the energy gels and fluid defintely helped me get through the 10 miles in 2hr 2mins.
I really think the hard training starts from........NOW.
I think I'll keep up the blog but it may start to get a bit more......well.....boring. Not sure how entertaining I can make a 13 mile plod on a wet Tuesday night. I'll see. Might go geeky for the fitness buffs or diversify a bit and give my views in a new section called 'The World According to Steve Smith'. Egomaniac style (I should be President of the World anyway).

Coasting
Think I'm back into the 9 to 5 routine now, although the mid afternoon 3pm dip hit me hard today and I really could have done with a wee power nap before my arranged run at 5pm with 'The Secret Runner' - Cobby. Briefly thought about cancelling the run but had a long hard think to myself and realised I'm alway harrassing people to run/boxercise/circuit class with me, so can't very well let people down who ask me to train with them, that would be pretty selfish. Following on from that, I have decided to do any type of training that anyone asks me to do that doesn't interfere with my scheduled runs. Except 5's and MMA, too much risk of injury as my 'give 100% attitude' could backfire at those (plus Gary Flynn is far too good at the MMA now).
Route tonight was - work, along Stannergate, along Strathern Rd, Claypotts then onto Balumbie - 5.3 miles in 57 mins bang on.
Now, interestingly, even though we picked up the pace the last half mile, we both had to agree that outwith the hillier sections, we were both coasting it. We were chatting no problem, no stiffness in legs and only minor aches and pains. We had both hydrated well before the run and even though it was a nice warm evening, we both felt pretty good and not uncomfortable at all.
The question is: should we have tried to run faster or should we have done a longer distance?
This is where my lack of experience is showing.
Now I did have a fish supper after the run for my tea and I know that doesn't sound like marathon training food but I was craving one. It's hard to explain but it felt like my body needed it. I had it and now 2 hours after the run, shower, fish supper and my daily dose of Judge Judy, I feel refreshed, relaxed and have no cravings. My point is, well........actually I don't know what my point is. Maybe I'm trying to justify to myself that I'm allowed to binge on fish suppers (and cans of pepsi + twixs) now that my training has increased.
Mmm. Food for thought.

Turning point
Up at dawns crack today to head through to deepest darkest Clackmananshire for a 9 miler with ultra-marathon runner/ endurance athlete and all round inspiration Garry MacKay http://www.breakingstrain.co.uk/ and Big Pete O - ex sprinter and semi pro rugby player and incidentaly a new dad!
Scrambled eggs on toast then headed through. Decided to get as much fluids as possible to avoid dehydration, as this seems to be a recurring theme. Unfortunately, by drinking so much, I had to pull over 3 times in a 1 hour drive to pee. Had been looking forward to seeing the boys and getting out but this was tinged with a bit of apprehension as naturally I didn't want to look out of my depth and a fat, unfit idiot. Slight concerns.
Started off through the woods, which I really enjoy. Then down along a coastal path that probably had amazing views of the Firth of Forth but it was quite foggy. Kept a steady pace and was able to catch up, get and bit of banter and most importantly, I learned LOADS about hydration, electrolytes, carbohydrate boosts and a number of tricks and tid bits that serious athletes use and need to think about and plan for long runs.
Me and Pete I thought were doing really well. Garry was pace setting brilliantly, not too fast and not too slow. Running with Garry I think could be the same as a pub player playing football with a top pro or a karaoke singer on stage singing with Adele or equivalent - once you get over the inferiority complex it turns out to be a real joy. Helpful, encouraging and inspiring. Although he did make us do a horrendous steep climb at the start of mile 8. Sadistic. But again afterwards, a real sense of achievement. Legs buckled for the first time running down a hill quite fast on home straight and I made a mental note not to do that again. They felt weak and wobbly like they were going to give way any moment.
Bacon rolls courtesy of Mrs Mac and fantastic banter from wee Christopher, rounded off a fine morning. I feel that today was a real turning point in my training. I feel stronger, more confidant and slightly more knowledgable. No small part to Garry and Pete. Although running is an individual pusuit, I have finally worked out why I like running with other people - my background is football, a team sport. I definately perform better in a team and now I know so many people who are doing the Dundee half marathon and Loch Ness marathon, I feel part of a team now and I love that.
Pete is doing the marathon too and I must admit, the night out in Inverness after the marathon is nearly as strong a motivation as raising the money for charity!
9 miles over various terrain - 1hr 49 mins.
Disaster struck on journey home though - realised after 8 odd miles I'd left my trainers at Garrys! Turned and headed back, only to see them pass me on road about half a mile from his!!!!! As usual, no credit on phone to phone him. Trainers stranded. I miss them.

Dark horses
Started a running group at work and had our first run tonight. There were 5 of us. Me Big Chris, Chris, Rosie and Cheryl. Decided to do a 3 miler to start off. Girls decided to speed walk first mile and half and run back. I said I'd do that too as have a 8 miler planned tomorrow.
BC and Chris took off running. Rosie and me tried to keep up with Cheryl. She is ridiculously fast at speed walking. If I was to guess, I'd say about 4.5 - 5 mph pace. My wee short legs couldn't keep up, so I started to trot along beside her. Rosie had dropped back but the boys were just ahead, not far and they were running.
Turned and started to run back with BC and Chris. Very good pace from all 4 of us. Rosie was awol by this point. Felt pretty strong heading back, thought I'd pulled away from the pack but when I finished after my sprint finish, the rest were right behind me!
All finished in 33 min for just over 3 miles. Boys happy with our time but lets think about this for a minute....BC and Chris kept up a steady running pace, I jogged then ran but Cheryl speed WALKED 2 thirds of the way. And when we ran together, she was fastest out of all 4 of us. Uncovered yet another dark horse.
Still no sign of Rosie.

Last 3 runs
15/04/11 - Met Big Chris, Brother Bartholomew and Kev from boxercise for a hill run. Started at mine, headed down to Magdalen Yard Green, then up Windsor St. Didn't feel that great, breathing hard and had a headache (very unusual for me). Hit West Park Rd and was already totally gubbed. Made it about 1 third way up, lowest point I've had to start walking on that hill. BB and Kev powered up it. Me and BC walked up. Then disaster! BB and Kev went RIGHT at the top! Should have went LEFT! Amateurs.
Me and BC plodded on, went half way up Balgay Hill and walked most of it then trotted back to start point. 48 mins. Unfortunately BB's car keys were in BC's car, so he had to wait till we got back. As he went RIGHT at the top of WPR, he was back to the start in 24 mins. He'll know better next time.
19/04/11 - Was not looking forward to this first run back after the London Blowout Weekend. Did not disappoint.
Met Cobby and BB at Balumbie, headed up to Sainsburys, then along Balunie Drive and into the promised land - Douglas. Legs felt stiff, sore and very heavy. Worked out for first 3 miles we were doing 10 minute miles. Pretty happy with that actually. Started to slow down after 3 miles and BB took off like a rabbit around a dog racing track. No chance of keeping up with him. Worse still - Cobby started opening up a lead!!! Cobby!!!!
Headed around past incinerator and back up to Balumbie. 4.3 miles, bang on 45 mins. Not bad. Got Cobby in my sights now though. Need to keep an eye on him. Turns out he's been doing secret runs on his own.
20/04/11 - Met Jefferson to do same hill run as described above top. Made is up Windsor St but realised pretty quickly I hadn't hydrated enough. Glad to see my legs kept going though.
Made it 2 thirds up WPR this time, so an improvement on Friday. I swear Jeff was hardly even breathing hard at the top. I couldn't belive it. He's miles fitter than I thought. Think I've talked him into doing the marathon too, so he should be a good long-term running partner for me.
Made it to the top of Balgay with a few stops and managed a 3 quarter pace race on the grass at the bottom. Very hard 43 min run but feel definite improvement. Soaked with sweat, dizzy and totally shattered. Jeff hadn't broke sweat.

Pizza and biscuits
Met Pose, Jefferson and Brother Bartholomew at Camperdown Park after work for a bit of cross country trail running. Fancied a change from pounding the streets and I think I enjoy trail running better.
Set off up through Campy towards Clatto Woods. Felt the pace at the start was a lot faster than normal. I put this down to BB and Jeff being in great shape just now and I was trying to keep up. Me and Pose were out of breath for first mile or so then got into a good pace too. Needless to say BB and Jeff built up a fairly substantial gap very quickly and took off.
Headed through the woods and I really loved running through the woods. Not to sound too poncy but it feels a lot more natural and enjoyable. Even though we were both breathing hard, we managed to get into a deep, interesting conversation. Passed the time well and after a circuit of the reservoir, we were heading back in no time.
Quite liking the banter you get from people you pass as discussed in previous blogs and a women out walking her dogs advised us that we 'would be able to run faster if you didn't gas so much'. Good advice probably but not so enjoyable a run.
Got back into Campy and really picked up the pace, it helped that it was downhill and on grass but it really felt fast. Finished bang on 50 mins, roughly 5 miles. BB and Jeff finished 2 mins later, turns out they ran about a mile and a half - 2 miles more than us too. Very good time and pace from them.
All in all - a hard, relatively faster pace than normal, enjoyable run. These boys committed to doing the Dundee half marathon now too, taking the total to 8. Good stuff.
Nick, Colin and Scrobe came up to mine tonight and we had pizza, coke and loads of biscuits. Really need to focus on my diet from now on.

Hot day + leggings = BAD IDEA
Didn't fancy a long run today and actually nearly never went, still feeling a bit tender from Friday. Glad I did though.
Picked up Big Ronnie and met Jeff and Cobby 10am at Stannegate. Thought a 5 mile run would be do able. Set off in glorious sunshine, at a good pace along by the banks of the Silvery Tay. Got to the castle quite quickly and were just going to do to end of esplanade then back to start - 6 miles. Jeff suggested going on 1 more mile to Monifieth caravan park, felt good, so said yes. Probably shouldn't have. Miles 4-6 were torture. Think maybe went too fast at start. Felt sick for the first time too.
Turned and headed back. Loads of people about by now as the weather was amazing. This in itself makes you try and run faster, especially when you get encouragement from people out for a stroll, or good looking women who shout at you they 'could walk faster' than your current pace also has a strong motivational affect on you.
Had a wave of sickness again at mile 7. Not sure why, thought I would have to stop and heave. Never had to though. Last mile was at a snails pace. Finished 8 miles in 1h 28min. 11 min miles. Avg heart rate - 154, max - 225. didn't stop once.
Lessons learn't: don't wear legging when its scorching (severe chaffage), try eating 2 hours before run to stop sick feeling, force myself to get more fluids in me and in future, try to pick up the pace when running past pretty older women.

Running up steep hills
Met BC and other Chris straight after work. BC has ditched his new running shoes that had ripped his feet to shreds and reverted back to his old flat trainees. Had in my head a hill run session would help the training. Started at mine and headed downhill to Magdalen Yard Green. Then headed up the first hill - Windsor St. We all managed to get to the top without stopping. Pace seemed ok. Scorching evening, sweat was lashing off me. Should have brought my running water bottle. Felt a bit parched before I left for run, so again, I learned a lesson.
Headed along Perth Rd. Dowser had said that West Park Rd was a good hill run, so headed up that. The first half of the hill is steep but we were warmed up and confidant by now, so we thought 'no problem'. Hit the second part of the hill and then - 'problem'. The road goes from steep to near-vertical. You can see it coming but it doesn't look that bad until you hit it. Legs went soft, glanced at my heart rate monitor - 229 bpm, Chris started walking but strangley he was keeping up with me (note to self: maybe need to up my running pace). Walked the last 30 metres and even that was a hoorendous struggle. BC nearly made it to the top.
Headed along Blackness rd to Glamis rd then up through the cemetry, up Balgay Hill. all 3 of us walked a few times at different stages. That hill is definitely steeper than its looks. Near the top there is a set of steps, took a rush of blood to the head and decided to sprint up them. Took off and actually made it to the top of them at nearly full pace. Felt great.
Picked up the pace on way down and did a bit of a sprint again at the end. Glorious evening, legs going like the clappers and finished strongly after a very, very hard workout.
Went bowling with the work later that night. Played shite, got hammered and spent all my money.

Jogging Pace
Did a 'speed' run yesterday. Changed shifts from 2-9pm to standard 9-5 shift on Monday, so was actually feeling knackered after work at 5. Chris from work (not Big Chris) said we definitely should. Peer pressure is a wonderful thing. The idea was to do a 3.8 mile run from work to airport and back as quickly as possible. I had thought that the miles I had been putting in recently would make this an easy run and I would get a good time that I could get excited about.
Wrong.
We took off running into the wind. Now it wasn't cold but the wind coming off the river was strong. Very strong. First mile was ridiculous. AGAIN barely above jogging pace. Struggling to breathe or talk, Kept going until airport and turned to come back. LOADS easier and picked up the pace but still felt sluggish and weak. A mile and a bit from home, Chris took off and built up a big gap. Tried to keep up but had to keep plodding. Then.......I noticed the gap was getting smaller - classic rookie mistake from Chris, foot on the gas to early. Picked up my pace, caught up and overtook him on the line!
Could be the way forward-mini races. We never even said we would race, didn't need to, male ego kicked in. Will try it agin on our hill run tomorrow with BC and Chris.

Bit of a gap in the old blogs, was at a wedding last weekend and didn't do much training the following week. At first I was a bit angry for myself for not training but I had a great weekend and caught up with some old friends and made a few new one, so all in all, can't complain. Actually went out for a run mid week but had to stop after 2 miles as my calfs had seized up completely. Big Chris went on and did the 5 miles though.
Started to watch my diet closely on Wednesday and have eaten really healthily since then. sticking to grilled chicken, fish etc and vegtables. Not too enspiring but I genuinely feel better for it. Not so bloated.
Met BC, Big Ronnie and Jeff at weekend for a run. Started preparations for the run night before, went to bed early, didn't eat rubbish, lots of water. Got up 3 hours before run and made sausages and scrambled egg, lots of diluting juice. Met at 10am and completed a 7 mile run. Jeff did it in 64 mins, no idea about Big Ron, he went AWOL and BC had to stop and walk as his new running trainers were hurting his feet. I did it in 80 mins dead. Awful time but glad I completed the longest run yet. As I had been drinking loads, I had to stop for a pee twice, not sure how to manage that one. Again really struggled in middle part of the run. Nearly gave up a few times.
Went out for pints at night to celabrate big run. Only another 19 miles to add to the 7 to go.

Shorts v Leggings
Met Big Chris 9am. Reason for missing run yesterday with no contact 'phone alarm was on silent'. I'll give him that, he's young and the force is strong in this one.
Started off our run at Clarkies (24 hour bakery), which as a lot of you know, is my home away from home. We didn't buy any food in case your thinking that, I was dropping my car of at the garage that happens to be right beside it. Honest.
Basically we ran from Clarkies onto Perth Road, up Glamis Rd, past Lochee park, through pentland and down to start. Actually, forgot to say, at the start, I gave BC the choice of running down or up Glamis Rd - he chose up. This meant that, for the first time, I had to stop about a third of the way up Glamis. It is ridiculously steep. Aim for half way up next time. Felt wimpish for having to stop but I couldn't keep going and the heart rate monitor was flashing 227 bpm. Started running again half way up it then made it to the top no bother, hit quite a good pace on the flat and ended up doing 3.92 miles in 41m 58 secs. Not bad considering the huge, steep hill and the couple minutes walking.
Wore my wee budgie smuggler running shorts for the first time today as it was scorching. Not sure if I prefer them or the leggings. Time will tell.

Heart
Bit worried about my heart. Not wanting to sound too dramatic for effect or anything but my heart rate monitor after my run today read: Average Heart Rate - 154, Max Heart Rate - 235. 235 beats per minute seems a lot to me. Will check on tinterweb.
Big Chris M.I.A this morning, waited 20 mins for him then headed up for a bit of off road trail running at Camperdown park today. Glorious sunshine and was feeling good. Decided to do a short run at a much higher pace. Even though the run was only for 22m 38secs, I think it was the hardest one yet. Really, really struggled up the hill and off road at the higher pace. Nearly stopped and walked several times and looking back, probably should have. Every time I was about to stop, someone appeared either on their bike, running or walking their dog, so really, it was vanity that kept me moving. Shallow.
Got a bit brave getting ready for work and put on a shirt that had previously been too small for me as I was sure I felt thinner today. Thought I fitted into it quite well - until I got into work and realised that, in fact, it WAS still too small. Vain.

First 5 mile run
Met Jeff and the force of nature that is Greg 'Pose' Boland at 10am for a scheduled 5 miler. Big Ronnie Smith called off with 'sare knees'.
Jeff and Pose are self confessed 3 mile specialists, so we took off at what I thought was a blistering pace. Very quickly I feel slightly behind and started to get a little bit angry at their laughing and joking with each other when I was unable to breathe properly. Made an executive decision to slow down and run at my own pace and let the athletes go on ahead. Hit quite a steep hill and about a mile in my pins in needles came back.
Nearly got minced from a canary yellow mini cooper whilst crossing a road, learning experience. Boys were pretty far ahead again and actually did find it really hard running on my own. Need Big Chris back.
Stopped for about 40 seconds as the pain from my pins and needles was all the way up my calf and got too much. First time I've stopped on any run so far. Got into a good rhythm and pins and needles died down a bit at mile 4 and last mile actually quite enjoyable. Finished in 51mins 43secs. Boys finished about 45 mins. They looked fine.
Went out for breakfast and a walk and now, 4 hours later, my legs feel fine, not stiff at all.

Food, Stitches, Wind, Beer and OWNED by my mother
Arranged to meet Big Chris outside work at 4pm today for a 4 miler.
Let me start again.....got up at 8am and first thing that popped and stayed in my mind was the run at 4. Now, for some reason, I woke up bright, alert and actually......looking forward to the run! Got into work early, got a lot of work done, had a wee laugh and carry on as usual. Then, for want of a better term. - It. All. Went. Tits. Up.
As I missed breakfast, was starving early, so headed to canteen for lunch just before the rush at 12. A stall was set up selling raffle tickets and cakes 'for Comic Relief'. Ordered a pork sausage and brown sauce baguette and headed over to buy a raffle ticket and a couple of cakes. Long story short- bought 4 cakes, can of coke, went back and bought soup and said to myself, 100% seriously and definitely belived it, 'massive run at 4 o'clock Stevie son, need to get some food in you, you'll need it'.
Had a wee (fire) evacuation chair training course in afternoon and when we were doing the practical part with the chair on the stairs, sweat was lashing off me. Brushed it off. Got the dry mouth then dry heaves. Didn't feel great.
Met Chris back of 4. By that time I was feeling like a fat James Corden. Oh yeah, if you haven't guessed, I ate all the cakes. We started off running to airport from work into a big wind. Chris had to stop to take care of some business, I went on manfully. Into the wind, dust in my mouth, developed a stitch, then another one in my neck/shoulder. Ears were freezing and I couldn't breathe properly. My head was thumping and my vision was becoming blurry. Looked at my watch, been running for '00:02:45'.
Chris caught up and we were both F@@@@@. Dindn't realise it is no use running with someone if they are having an off day too. Anyway, we plodded on, turned at half way and then.....THE WIND WAS BEHIND US. Everything felt great. Took off for home, even started chatting. Due to a slight techinical error on my part, we ended up running into a dead end (actually the RSS Discovery/ River Tay), so not sure of distance but my stopwatch said '00:54:38'. Longest run yet.
Nipped up to my mum's for tea in full running gear. Had a great afterglow, happy, proud of myself feeling. She opened the door and instead of her usual cheery greeting she gasped in horror and half shouted 'My God, I didn't realise your legs are so skinny'. Now, as quite a few of you know, I am known for my Chris Hoy like, footballers thighs and my calfs are bigger than most shot putters necks, but....but....I have noticed recently that my legs are losing the definition and girth of old. 1- nil Mum.
Arranged to meet Scrobe for a couple of beers. On leaving my mums after a good mum tea, bath and chill out, she asked if I could drop something into hers tomorrow morning. Conversation went like this:
Mum - See you back of 10 then?
Me - Easy Mum, I'm out for a few beers tonight.
Mum - Ok. Back of 12?
Me - (Big smile and a huge shrug) Mum, can't promise anything, I may strike it lucky tonight and you'll not see me all weekend (wink).
Mum - (shutting door and under her breath) We can only live in hope.......

Sick
Met Big Chris and another Chris from work today for a 3.5 miler. Glorious day in the D today but a tad aprehensive as still feeling the affect from the weekends drink/pizza/chinese blow out. Told new Chris the run was flat and 3 miles to make sure he came - lies. MassEEEEVE, long, steep hill 5 mins into the run. Hard. DID NOT ENJOY the hill, at all. Nearly cut away near the top on a short cut but big Chris sais 'No'. Got to the top and was nearly sick. This is the first time I've felt sick, so took a mental note that porridge 1 hour before run may be too soon. Also got a bit confused on the home straight and took off at a 3/4 pace when I thought the end of the run was near, only to realise there was another half mile around the next corner. Again was nearly sick at that point. Big Chris realised that Nutella on toast 10 mins before a hard run, not a good idea. Other Chris totally fine on run.
Week 2. Things I've learned so far:
1. This is going to be harder than I thought.
2. Alcohol and the after effects set me back too many days.
3. Running with someone suits me.
4. Don't tell anyone your planning to run a marathon before you start training for it and find out if it's even possible.
Also, I'm getting ridiculous pins and needles in my right foot. Does anyone any ideas how to stop this happening? Painful and annoying.

3.25 miles
3.25 miles. 3.25 miles. 3.25 miles. It doesn't seem a lot when you write it but it was HARD. Between 1.5 and 2.5 miles I very nearly jacked the whole thing. Went out with Big Chris and if he wasn't there, I would have definitely stopped. Went through the whole 'why, whats the point?' routine and obviously this will get worse over time - hence the reason I'm going to get in touch with the charity Clic Sargent to keep motivated. Cheers to Lee for recommending them.
Strangely my sore left foot got better AFTER the run. Weird.
Was on a course at work today, learn't that I'm not as assertive as I thought - who knew? Went out after work for first beers in a few weeks. Broke my 'no pint' ban though. Started off in mine with Graham with a couple bottles of beer and a bottle of vodka. Met boxercise class people, Scrobe and Davie from work - great banter. Pished. Felt good after the run.
Rest day today. Pizza and soem films I think. 4 mile run tomorrow. Again it doesn't sound a lot but I'm sure it will be hard. Oh and I met the woman I'm going to marry yesterday too.

Throbber
Day 3: Woke up with a throbbing and very painful left foot today. Doesn't seem to be any reason for it. A tad gutted to be honest. I'm blaming it on the extra timber I'm carrying putting strain on things after the wee run yesterday. Or, could be The Gout back......took some anti-inflamitory's, so fingers crossed.

Bullshit
Woke up this morning, bright, sunny day in the D. Dundee won again last night and had a cup of tea with no sugar yesterday. All is good.
Made a momentous decision not to bullshit myself or this blog. No half truths, wee white lies or exaggarations. Quite a feat for me. So in the interest of full disclosure, I'm actually 14st 4lb and done a couple of Tay Bridge runs and spin classes over the last wee while, so not exactly a standing start. Although I have just gotten over a bout of The Gout, so not exactly in peak physical condition.
Met Big Chris from work 10am. The bright, sunny day turned out to be a bright, freezing, bitting cold wind day. I came in classic 'all the gear, no idea' mode -5'6", dumpy, illuminous jacket, hat, leggings, running trainers. Chris - 6'5" , thin, long shorters, short sleeve T and a pair of Gazzelle.
Took off at a steady pace, bit of chat, quite flat. Knew there was a steep hill coming up, so the chat stopped. The tension started creeping in....who would be the first to stop?.......who would crack first? Lots of spitting and houghing already. Hit the hill, slowed down, breathing hard. Thought the hill finsihed but actually continued around the corner for another couple hundres metres, that was the hardest part. Both kept going though. Flattened out, steady pace. 2 thirds way round we 'picked up the pace'. Mistake. 30 seconds later, back to our plodding pace. Last 120m we 'sprinted' the the bus stop (our end of run).
Result - we never stopped once, we did a big hill and we varied the pace. 2.91 miles in 28min 40 sec. Avg heart rate 183, max heart rate 208. It had turned into a scorching, bright spring day, we felt knackered but good.
Long way to go but good start. Away to have lunch - no Cadburys Fingers today.

Day 1 - Motivation, diet and kit
I spent a few hours on Sat and Sun researching marathon training, diet, kit etc on loads of websites. This has (had) given me lots of motivation but after a long lie today and looking out the window and deciding it was too windy - I missed my first official training run.
This was quickly follwed by a massive lunch and a whole tray of cadbury's fingers before work.
My mates Garry and Lee have just completed a 100 mile ultra-marathon in the Arctic, so I had another look at their website for more motivation. It's a real inspiration to see people you know training and completing such a momentous goal. http://www.breakingstrain.co.uk/. After looking at the website, my motivation is back. Going for a 3 mile 'run' tomorrow with a guy from work - hope it's not too windy.
I think I have the correct kit and learned LOADS from this site http://www.marathontraining.com/ just need to get this first run out the way tomorrow.
Diet is obviously hugely important, so I have decided to:
Drink alcohol only twice per month, instead of 4+ (by drink I mean nights out)
Not drink pints of beer
Drink spirits with sugar free mixers
Cut out all sparkling soft drinks
Drink sugar free squash
Stop having sugar with tea
Have only 1 night per week eating take away. Cook everything else fresh.
6 days a week, have my 5-a-day.
Cut back on bread
Cut out fried food altogether
Any other ideas, would be much appreciated.
